What is Earth Day ?
I normally like to write a post before each Earth day suggesting Earth day activities and ways to celebrate it, but this year it just crept up out of nowhere. How on earth is it nearly the end of April!! It feels like five minutes ago I was talking about Christmas. Anyway for those of you who don’t know about Earth day let me fill you in.
Earth Day began in 1970 in the USA and is celebrated on 22nd April each year. It is a day to think about our planet and what we can do to keep it healthy; to think about saving water and energy, reducing pollution, recycling, protecting our animals, trees and plants, and generally getting kids interested in protecting their environment. It is starting to get increasing celebrated outside the US and I think in a year or two l may well become a national holiday. It is certainly something I think is good to be mindful of and bring to our children’s attention.
What can you do
All over the world and the blogosphere, crafts activities, play ideas and save the earth ideas roll out to clebreate Earth Day. I am loving this coffee filter stained glass craft idea to show the idea of the world being hels d in careful hands. There are loads of Earth day activities for kids over at Activity village too which is always packed with great ideas. You can make a family pledge to being more green over at A billion acts of green which is a great way for you to see how global the Earth day love really is. We are going to pledge to litter pick once a month by out local canal.
What could you do? Why not have a family chat about it today and see if you have an idea to add to the pledge.
I am so sorry I didn’t get my act together as I think this is such an important day but I urge you all, if at all you can in some way today do try to tell your little ones about our fragile Earth and how it needs our love and care.
Here is some repsonsible stuff we can do with out kids today:
Turn off the TV !
Fill a charity bag rather than landill
Craft something from your recycle bin
Turn off the tap in between brushing teeth..
Have a shower not a bath.
Pop on a jumper not the heating
Plant an apple seed
There’s lots we can do. Simple stuff,
But Earth Day is meant to be a celebration too, so you could
Hug a tree
