Test your stopping speed skills

Test your stopping speed skills

Are you prepared to test your stopping speed skills?

Many people think their driving skills are tip-top and they have it all under control but it is amazing what little bit of distraction can do.

Driving Distractions

What distracts you when you drive?

For me, the biggest distraction is when people talk to me..I struggle to focus. Not so easy when you have kids though right so they are under strict instructions to only talk to each other when I am driving (unless they need a wee!)  I don’t find music distracting but any dice hanging in the car window HUGELY distract me too.

I know I am probably pretty unusual in that but hey at least I what distracts me – and this does really matter as the impact on your stopping distances can be vital.

Mobile phones can be a huge problem in cars. Even when they just ring it can disconcert you. but answering them? Well, that is a whole new level of distraction.

And any driving distractions are potentially lethal we all know that.

How talking on the phone impacts your driving

We all know we should not use our phones whilst driving. Not only is it against the law but it also dangerous. Whilst we do all know this many people either forget or think they can handle holding and talking on their phones and driving.

Kwik-Fit have created a game to help you see quite how much talking on the phone impacts you.

They have created an interactive game that tests your stopping speed rate whilst trying to use your phone which can be played here – have a go at Driven to Distraction!  I found it very eye-opening.

My stopping distance was dramatically impacted when I talked on the phone and undoubtedly an accident would have been far more likely to occur. Eek. Do let me know how you get on with this in the comments below.

Pass it on

I actually think this little game is brilliant.

If you know someone who does use their phone and drive even if only very occasionally then DO guide the to have a go at this game. it could absolutely change their mindset.  In the process of changing their mindset, you could potentially also save a life. Do pass this game on!

None of us wants to preach at people but car safety is of such importance we have to try don’t we. So why not pass on a link to this game. It could make all the difference.

A lttle legal recap

It’s illegal to hold a phone or sat nav while driving or riding a motorcycle. You must have hands-free access, such as: a bluetooth headset voice command a dashboard holder or mat a windscreen mount a built-in sat nav The device must not block your view of the road and traffic ahead. You must stay in full control of your vehicle at all times.

The police can also stop you if they think you’re not in control because you’re distracted and you can be prosecuted even if NOT holding the phone

The law still applies to you if you’re: stopped at traffic lights queuing in traffic supervising a learner driver

Be safe everyone.
