Profile of a Budgeting Mum: Erica Douglas

Hi, what’s your name?

My name’s Erica

Any kids?

I have one daughter who’s five.

Do you work? FT/PT?

I work part-time and I study full time.  I know, it doesn’t add up, that’s what I keep telling my husband 😉

Why do you work?

My work is also my hobby and it fulfills needs in me like wanting to create things, be successful and help others.

What are your child care arrangements?

My work is completely flexible so I work around school hours and holidays.  Sometimes it can be busy when the schools are off but it’s better than having to pay extortionate childcare fees.

How do you manage for money?

We do fine, more so now that we have two incomes.  We have a low mortgage and aren’t very materialistic.  We like to live within our means and our income is growing as I build my income streams.

Do you worry about money?

Almost never now.  I’ve come to realise that I’d rather cut back than have to worry about being in debt.

What do you waste money on?

Oh take aways and eating out definitely!  Although we don’t drink or smoke so I guess food is our weak spot.

Have you made any big financial changes since having kids?

We made a big financial change when Erin was born as I didn’t return to work and we learned to live off one *very* moderate wage.  That kind of budgeting has stood us in good stead  and made us realise how little we need to be happy.

How do you make extra cash?

I used to sell stuff on eBay.  Nowadays I focus on adding income streams to my business so I sell all sorts of advertising and we create eBooks and eCourses.

Can you share 3 top budgeting tips for other parents?

1.  Learn to live on less.  It’s far more enjoyable than spending your time worrying about debt.

2.  Get a seperate account and transfer enough money to cover all the bills as soon as it comes in.

3.  There are a million ways to earn extra cash.  If you find that once you’ve transferred money for bills (see 2!) there’s not much left, find ways to make an extra £50 a week that you can spend on having fun.  Taking control of your financial position is empowering.  Manage your money before it starts managing you!
