Prepare For Your Baby’s Arrival – On a Budget!

So you’re on the journey to becoming a parent, you’ve done your research and asked all the questions you can think of. With all the big milestones like buying baby furniture, decorating the nursery, and picking out names behind you – it’s time to get down to business. Your due date is fast approaching… time for your little one to enter the world!

Woah woah woah, hold on, let’s rewind.

Prepare For Your Baby's Arrival

Do your research

The very first step in preparing for the arrival of your little one is to do your research. Decide what essentials you need to source before your baby arrives and what items can be bought at a later stage if needed. Make a list. This will keep you organised and ensure you don’t forget anything.

Once you’re happy with your shopping list, decide how much money you can afford to spend on the essentials and how much you are willing to set aside for some optional extras and last minute purchases. At this stage, Google is your best friend! read parenting books and ask friends and family with kids what they believe to be most important and what is just not necessary. Everyone has a unique experience so it will help to hear a wide variety of perspectives.

Ask for hand-me-downs

Before you splash the cash, ask around for hand-me-downs. I know you maybe don’t want to hear this but your newborn won’t be a newborn for long! Babies grow up very fast and before you know it you’ll be ditching the newborn essentials for toddler essentials.

For this reason, we recommend asking friends or family with children for hand me downs. It is very possible that they have some newborn essentials that are still in good working condition that their babies have simply outgrown. This will save you money that you can either save for a rainy day or invest in another product.

Shop secondhand

Your next port of call for budget essentials should be second hand stores and marketplaces. These are great locations to again get items that other babies have outgrown but have no actual functional issues. Make sure to read about and potentially view the products before you buy them to make sure they are clean and in good condition for your new arrival. It is also a good idea to wash and disinfect any items you buy as they may have been in storage or out of use for a while.

Buy good quality, long lasting products

Finally, if you are unable to find appropriate hand-me-downs or secondhand items, or you simply would prefer to buy brand new, you should aim to buy high quality, durable items for your new arrival. When on a budget, you may think the cheapest option is the best value, however, remember that you need to get good use out of these products. If you know you are having a baby girl, and you’ve got little ladies in the family already then investing in something like a Wooden Pink Dollhouse makes sense. It is built to last through generations so you know you will get good use out of it. When your little one outgrows it, it might also make a cool little keepsake or sentimental treasure. You may even wish to pass it on to friends and family expecting their own new arrivals as a hand-me-down (see above!).

You are sometimes better to buy a slightly more expensive product that you are sure is sturdy, reliable and trustworthy than buying a lower quality option for the price tag that maybe won’t last as long. You’ll end up paying more in the long run to replace it when it breaks.

Again, shop around and find what works best for you!

First night mindset

It is important to remember, every baby is different and chances are you will think of more essential items to buy once your little one is born and you know more about their individual needs.

All you can do is be ready for the first night and learn as you go! This includes having a bassinet or crib set up so that they sleep on their back, lots and (I cannot stress this enough) lots of nappies and some comfy sleep clothes. A changing table, rocker, car seat and nappy bag will also make that transition home with your new baby that little bit easier.

Remember To Enjoy It All Too

If all of this preparation feels a little dry, nursery decor and some fun decorative items can make preparing for your little one that bit more enjoyable. Plus, the more you get done early, the less you will have to worry about when they arrive and you have no time to yourself! If you’ve ever tried putting together a new flat pack furniture set at 2 am, you realize just how difficult it can be!

Purchase some fun toys or playthings such as coloured HABA building blocks that will not only liven up your space a little but will nurture learning and last for a long time due to being made with durable high quality materials. Toys like this are a great investment as they can be fun for a huge range of ages meaning your baby will enjoy them for years to come!

Final Thoughts

As you’re going through the process of preparing for your little one’s arrival, don’t forget to enjoy it all. You’ll never know when or if this experience will ever happen again so take in every moment with your baby from their very first diaper change all the way up to when they can dress themselves and do everything else on their own. The time you spend with your baby is precious and we’re here to ensure that it’s always comfortable, convenient & affordable.
