How to prepare for a baby without breaking the bank

Guest Post- prepare for a baby without breaking the bank

If you’re expecting a little bundle of joy, you’ve probably got a million and one questions running through you head – particularly if you are a first-time-parent. Many mums and dads-to-be worry about their finances, but there are ways to prepare for your new born – without overspending.

Speak to a financial advisor

These days, many people rely on UK credit cards and bank loans for extra financial support. These can help you during difficult times, but if you’re struggling to make repayments it’s definitely worth talking to a financial advisor before your baby arrives. A professional will help you get everything in order and give you the reassurance you need to welcome a new life into the world.

Set a budget

With a baby on the way it can be tempting to apply for a credit card and spend a fortune on all things baby related. There are some seriously cute toys, teddies, clothes, prams and nursery accessories out there, so it’s essential to write a list of what you need a set a budget. This might seem a little restrictive but it will help keep you on the straight and narrow when you step foot in the Disney Store or Mothercare.

Recycle, reuse and buy second hand

While it’s nice to buy one or two new outfits for your baby, it’s not worth spending a fortune on clothes. Babies grow at an alarming rate, so look for second hand garments or dig out the dungarees, cardigans and teeny hats you bought for their siblings. There’s a high chance they’re still in good condition and can be put to use once again.

Sell your maternity clothes

Every penny counts when you’re expecting, so why not sell your old maternity clothes online? Simply take a picture of the garment you want to shift and post them on a suitable website. There are loads of mums-to-be out there looking to buy inexpensive pregnancy gear, so you should find it sells quite quickly – so long as you keep the price down. Include postage and packaging in the price or add an additional fee to keep your profit up.

Throw a baby shower

Throwing a baby shower may seem a little indulgent, but it’s the perfect opportunity to see your friends and relatives before the baby arrives. Of course, you’re sure to receive a wealth of gifts (which could save you a bob or two) but you could also pick up a host of useful parenting tips. Traditionally, this celebration was just for mums and ladies, but these days anyone is invited. If you’re feeling too tired before the birth, you could always hold a party once your new born has arrived.

Costs can go through the roof if you’re not careful, so organise your finances throughout pregnancy and beyond.
