Hi, what’s your name? Bethan
Any kids? One girl, just over ten weeks old
Do you work? FT/PT? I left my 45-50 hour a week job when I was 26 weeks pregnant
If you don’t work why don’t you?
I am planning to find a new job in September when my daughter is six months old although if I could afford not to, I wouldn’t.
What are your child care arrangements?
When it comes to it my daughter will have to go into a nursery or potentially go to a childminder. My parents both work full-time and live over an hour away.
How do you manage for money?
At the moment, I get maternity allowance from the government and my partner works full-time.
Do you worry about money?
Pretty much all the time, it’s one of the big things that plays on my mind constantly
What do you waste money on?
I used to waste money on clothes and books, I mean, I have so many books I’ve never read I don’t need to buy anymore!
Have you made any big financial changes since having kids?
My perspectives have changed, I know now that I have to ensure she has what she needs before I think about buying that magazine/chocolate bar – not big changes I know, but they add up.
How do you make extra cash?
I sold most my books from my studies through Amazon marketplace, I am also considering finding some freelance copywriting/proofreading work but we’ll see how that goes!
Can you share 3 top budgeting tips for other parents?
1. Save anything less than 50p in a ‘money box/jar’ the number of times we’ve been short at the end of the month and made it finding £5-6 in the magic jar!
2. When you do have money – bulk buy. For example, I never buy single packs of nappies or wipes, even if I only need one packet, I bulk buy as many as I can afford at the time so we’re covered for tighter times!
3. Embrace the sales/outlet stores! Does it really matter if your kid’s clothes are “this seasons”? I have got almost a year’s worth of clothes for my daughter by getting upto 75% off in high street sales and of course, by utilising my best friend eBay!
About me: I’m Bethan, I’m twenty-three and I live in North West England, I like to write, eat, read and I blog over at bethan-no-y. I have a small daughter who blows my mind & two massive, disobedient dogs! I’m currently taking some time out to get to know my daughter and deciding what to do next, as well as writing for Brew Drinking Thinkings.
Thank you Bethan!
