We once moved house when we didn’t have much money and when the removal men turned up at the new property we didn’t yet have a key. So my money savvy husband (who worked out we were paying them by the hour and this could get expensive) told them to go ahead and unpack into the garden.
‘NO’ I protested ‘what if it rains!’ He ignored me. It rained on our sofa.
Nightmare.

Here are some budget-friendly tips to moving house without resorting to such drastic cost cutting measures.
- Ask at a local supermarket for boxes and bubble wrap. These can be expensive. Towels also wrap treasures well for removals Do use your holiday suitcases too.
- Start to sort and pack in plenty of time and have by your side a bag for rubbish, a bag for the charity shop, and a bag for eBay and your recycling bags close at hand. Sort and get rid. Be ruthless you will have far less to move.
- Let your kids be involved in a garage / car boot sale and let them sell all their little bits and bobs and unwanted toys for pennies. Let them keep what they make from their stuff and tell them they are only allowed to do this as long as EVERYTHING unsold goes to the charity shop. Sell your unwanted odds and ends too. Saves HOURS in packing and moving kids toys and makes a few pound all round.
- You could move lots of boxes yourself and rope in family and friends to help too. Label everything clearly and have each car ake a different room where possible to keep you on track.
- Hiring a man and van can be a really good option (or a woman and van of course!) You will probably only pay by the hour (going rate with my mate is £20) and if the van is big enough and you have burly pals willing to help then your bed, sofa, tables, etc. can all be transferred this way. This can be a much cheaper option than using a big firm.
