Getting Girls into Football with SSE Wildcats sessions #SSEWildcats

The SSE Wildcats scheme is the perfect way for girls to get into football.

The FA have a target of doubling girls’ participation in football by 2020. As part of that plan they are promoting girls only football initiatives this year, including SSE Wildcats Girls’ Football Clubs.

SSE Wildcats Girls’ Football Clubs provide girls with regular opportunities to play football and take part in organised sessions in a fun and engaging environment created exclusively for girls. 200 clubs have been established across England throughout the spring and summer.*

The sessions take place on a weekly basis, either after school or at weekends and at just £2 a session it really is an inexpensive activity to have a go at,

We were invited to go along to our local club and give SSE Wildcats a go. If you want to do the same and find out where your local club is do pop over to the SSE Wildcats web page and have a look.

It was absolutely pouring with rain when we set off but we were keen and my daughter was both nervous and excited.

She even made a little video!

So how did it go?

Well Lise was joining in with a group of children who had been playing together for a number of weeks and was understandably nervous about joining them. When I spoke to the  Notts FA organiser for girls football Leanne, she assured me the coaches and the girls were really friendly and relaxed and that the session would be a lot of fun.

She was absolutely right!

Lise had such a nice time and was welcomed with open arms. There was lots of laughter, lots of training and a match! The coaches made it so much fun and taught lots of skills too.She would definitely go again and we were delighted to hear there would be sessions opening up closer to us soon.

We are big fans of football. My daughter plays every morning pre – classes in the school playground and I have seen the teamwork amongst the kids grow as they have played more and more and she is braver now and more considered as she plays.

This is definitely something she is keen to pursue so thank you to SSE Wildcats for inviting us over and I urge you to find your local club and pop along with your girls and give it a try

The SSE Wildcats slogan is “Have Fun, Make Friends, Play Football”and that’s exactly what the sessions are about.

The FA are completely committed to getting more girls involved in football you can read more about it by following this link

Good point you make about the sport encouraging teamwork as you have observed in the playground. It’s lovely that your daughter is having these experiences to experience new sports and I loved her video where she proudly says ‘Me and my mum are ambassadors!’ Bless her!

It’s lovely to hear that the other girls are so welcoming to new members – I can mirror that experience with SSE Wildcats in Newcastle too

Aw I’m glad she’s enjoyed it! We’ve kept up our sessions too – it’s a bit of a drive but having an all-female class makes a huge difference to her confidence (boys often wouldn’t pass to her and would be better than her). I love that the Wildcats sessions existed, and I’m glad we got to try it – it has made such a difference! (she says as we head out to our Crystal Palace ones!)
