Barclaycard Freedom Rewards are running a series of videos in association with Mumsnet, featuring Andrea McLean, Julia Bradbury, Ben Shephard and Ruth Langsford, who are aiming to share shopping advice and tips for families just in time for the shopping season. This could be very useful to all you budgeters!
The first of these videos launched this week and discusses budget shopping tips and family fun on a budget – how perfect for my readers! (grab yourself a cup of tea and have a watch it’s great!)
My family fun ideas for half term would be to keep it simple and use what you already have:
- Get out and about with a camera…kids love taking photos and it helps them see the world in a whole new light
- Have their little friends round to play children, can entertain each other for hours!
- Get crafty – dig into your recycling box, get out the paints and see if you can make a model if your street
- Get to the library and stock up …it’s free and full of treasure
- Get baking ..we have to eat anyway and it ‘ s fabulous fun for little ones!
- Get playing …learn a few new board games and have some quality family time!

We like to make things out of bits and pieces lying around the house. It’s a fun, cheap way to get creative
If you don’t mind shelling out a lump sum once a year, you could get a family membership with English Heritage or the National Trust. It quickly pays for itself, and then some, and means you can visit your local sites again and again for as little or as much time as you like. Plus, if you go a bit further afield on holiday, there’s often a castle, old home, or museum to see.
We live at the seaside so it’s usually a trip to the beach, foraging in the rock pools.
We like to make homemade pizzas together, kids enjoy choosing their own toppings and helping roll out the dough. Then we settle down with a film or saturday night tv and make a pillow nest on the sofa.
I visit the supermarket daily looking for the reduced loaves of bread at 10p – we then go to our local lake and feed the ducks …. keeps the kids entertained for hours (and the ducks well fed) for under a 50p
A game of charades always get the whole family laughing in no time
Thanks for the comp! My tweet is here: https://twitter.com/Ananda1972/status/393026816513806336
A trip to the cinema, particularly if we can get free tickets or money-off offers 🙂
In our house we never moan when it rains heavily at the weekends – we all grab our wellies and go for a splash in the puddles at the park! We call them ‘puddle days’ and the kids love it! We’re lucky as we live right next to the park so it’s only a minute away from home, so not too far to go when we’re all soaking wet!
We then get back and snuggle in our PJs! Puddle days are the best! x

Walk in the woods collecting natural materials. On arrival back home use clay or plasticine and pieces from the collection to make interesting creatures.
Water play either outside or in.
Have a ‘discover’ day. Drive out to somewhere you haven’t been before and explore….
going to the woods for a nice long walk in muddy puddles
Living in LDN makes it very easy to do something cheap..we tend to go to Richmond Park for games and a picnic, or Kew gardens (we have family membership so it works out very good value) weather permitting. If not we go to one of the wonderful Museums (free),
A day out walking with a picnic and doing some foraging.

Loaf of a bread, jar of jam and piece of string provided a great fun family day a few weeks ago. Made a few jam sandwiches to take to the park, emptied the rest of the jam into a tub and cleaned the jar, attached some string and headed for the local park and had a picnic, followed by a bit of minnow fishing in the stream and then fed the ducks what was left of the bread. Our son also had a play in the park. Cost next to nothing and kept all of us entertained for the afternoon.
We would head out to the woods & look for the gruffalo’s house or to see if we can hear the whisps & fairies, such an exciting time for the kids while rambling through the trees lol

rent a movie to watch at home and buy some popcorn
My girls are especially fond of a “grown up meal” which means we light the candles, put some music on, use wine glasses (though at 2,5 and 6 theirs are filled with a little lemonade) and all sit and have a meal at the dining room table.
We generally all sit together at meal times but with 3 children and a husband in the Forces dinners are rarely peaceful or relaxed. It’s lovely to make more or an effort one day a week and sit down and enjoy proper family time!
we have fun by in the summer we have made a picknic and gone to the park with outdoor games and in the winter we make cakes together
We like to go for a nature walk in the countryside with the dog
Go to alarge garden centre now they have just got winter gifts & decorations in stock some of them really make an effort its like a winter wonderland and looking costs nothing My favs Dobbies & barton grange in Lancs
monopoly marathons…..as long as I can be Scottie dog!
A walk around the local nature reserve, cataloguing all the wildlife we encounter.
We go exploring in the woods and make hidden shelters great fun for all.
We have movie nights on the sofa with old DVDs, the curtains shut to make it dark and popcorn and sweets from Aldi.
there are so many fun days out once you start looking, local national trust & rspb parks are popular in our house 🙂

Go for a run
We tend to have an indoor picnic combined with a DVD. We place a picnic rug in front of the tv and have all the usual picnic goodies PLUS our two children make their own popcorn. If we time it right, we have pizza that’s leftover from previous tea time . Prawn crackers made at home are a great filler (and entertaining to watch!) stores such as Pound shops , Home Bargains and B&M are a great source of cheap treats.

We like to bake cupcakes and decorate them with whatever we can find in the baking cupboard.
We have great fun playing board games and card games with some home made pop corn to snack on.

Go to the free museums and galleries around London there are so many nowadays with a packed lunch which we eat in the gardens, saves a fortune and there is always something new to see and quite often a number of free special exhibits.
Ours is Hire a film cook some popcorn make some pop in the soda stream and we all sit down and relax n/a
we go to the seaside, luckily it is quite near, but we always take our own supply of buckets and spades etc and a picnic. We spend all day there!
Good Outdoor fun on the beach as we are very close. We build home made sledges and race down the shingle banks. When the weather is too rough then we love art and crafts and believe me can make almost anything out of a corn flake packet 🙂
We go for days out to free museums, also check for local free events, go to the kids AM club at the VUE cinema as it is really cheap, go for woodland walks, reservoirs etc
we love the old favourite of going to the swing park followed by a walk with the dog.
As well as going to the library for books, cd’s and DVD’s, check out their regular craft activities that are very often FREE! Half term approaches so get in quick, incase you have to book a place!
Also, our library has a film club membership – £45 for a whole year, two DVD’s at a time, but as many DVD’s as you like in that time! Fab for rainy days and weekends. Invest £5-£6 in a cheap popcorn maker and you need never buy expensive shop bought popcorn again too!
Draw the curtains and curl up all together on the sofa!

We go on rambles, exploring our island, we take flasks of hot drinks with us on colder days and a picnic to eat in the car. We always hunt for things whether its stones from the beach or pine cones in the woods. Then we have something to craft with when we get back.
Have tweeted: https://twitter.com/HappyHomebird/status/393086438889107456
We keep a change jar that everything goes into each night. Each month this is enough for us to have a lovely family day out.
Rent a movie from the library.
Pack a backpack with a picnic and take the dog on a very long walk on good weather days or make tents in the lounge with bed sheets and have a picnic inside, and much more for free as that’s as far as my budget will stretch to, but my kids love it 🙂

We have family camping holidays. Our favourite site is really cheap per night and surrounded by woods, streams and a river, lots of wildlife, hills and a small village, so we’re never bored.

Our latest fun adventures have been collecting as many pine cones as possible from our local park, painting them and then putting them in our very bare flower borders to brighten the garden up.
we like to get baking – crispy cakes decorated spookily, fairy cakes, biscuits etc. Hours of fun when the icing is made and added!
We too have a picnic in the park or on the beach. Or we build a den out of the clothes horse and quilts.
Luckily we live at the coast so the beach is always a no-cost option even in cooler weather.
We have a movie night at home every Friday. A DVD or a film on LoveFilm, sweeties bought from the supermarket, home made milkshakes, duvets and lots and lots of snuggles.
https://twitter.com/PootlerMSE/status/393090186940141568
There’s nothing more my kids like than the local park. And it’s free!
Cinemas often have a kids club at the weekend, our local does early films on saturday and sunday for £1 a ticket which gives us all a great weekend treat.

We go to the beach or the park with a homemade picnic and play hide and seek or bug hunting. Quality time costs nothing!…….x
Pizza and a Disney movie
Play hide and seek
Picnics at the beach in winter wearing warm clothes but sunglasses and sun hats and pretending we are somewhere hot and abroad!
Print restaurant vouchers from the internet and all go out for a dinner 🙂
Our family love word seache’s so we buy cheap printer paper & print lots out, use pencils to fill them in the rub them out & do them again another time
If you have a good local attraction like a farm park or a zoo consider getting annual passes for it. The tickets usually pay for themselves in a couple of visits and you can just pack up a picnic and head there for a few hours without feeling like you’ve wasted money.
My family has fun on a budget using our blindfold game. We have a home-made poster on the back of my daughter’s bedroom door with a variety of activities to do including making paper aeroplanes, writing a letter and posting it, a random act of kindness, going to the park, baking cakes, having a staring competition, visit a friend/family member, go to the local farm, feeding the ducks, going to the library, having a picnic, dancing, going to the cinema etc and during the holidays each day I blindfold her and she has to randomly point to an activity and that is what we do for that day. My daughter loves it and we will be continuing this activity with the lil’ one we have on the way 🙂
We go for a walk along the beach, looking for interesting stones and counting the boats that we can see. We then share a bag of chips to warm up!
Making use of the children sure start centres they are FAB!
We live in a beautiful country and as a family we enjoy our most natural resources, the beach, woods, parks, countryside, local lakes and open spaces. We make our own entertainment be it rock hopping, picnicing, making sand pies or fishing in rock pools, collecting stones, shells, feathers, leaves, acorns and conkers. We laugh and play, talk and play games, we enjoy each others company, priceless in my opinion.

If the weather is bad – family film with popcorn and treats or a few game of Wii bowling. Gets us all playing together.

We have decided once baby has outgrown her first 0-3 month clothes we are going to cut them up and make it into a patchwork blanket for her for when she is a bit bigger in a child’s bed, so she has the memories and we have used them for another benefit rather than throwing them away, we are also using our left over floral material for our wedding invitations and decorations to make her a summer dress.
we like to do whatever Peppa Pig has been doing that week – making pancakes, playing a new game, going to the park etc.

We enjoy going to the beach, digging sandcastles and rockpooling and maybe an ice cream to finish.
Stay in and watch the telly.
We love to bake and cook together as a family. Great fun, creative, and good value for money!!
Our favourite family thing to do on a budget is to visit one of our local museums and galleries. We are blessed to have several to choose from, and each one has so many diverse and interesting exhibits to see, we never get bored. They’re free to get into and we normally take snacks with us so it’s a really cheap, fun day out, with the added bonus of learning something too!!

we create a fort in our living room out of blankets or cardboard boxes and try and capture it from the kids
We live close to some rugged, secluded stretches of coastline, completely from of amusement arcades or any amenities!
We take portable BBQ’s and all of our own supplies.
This along with old fashioned bats, balls, buckets, spades make for a great day out.
At the end of the day, the kids are happy tired .. instead of chewy tired, from amusements and junk food.
Various activities, bird watching as we live next to a river, walks, splashing in puddles, our world explorer game where we spin a globe and see where we stop it then pretend we’re in that country looking up animals, languages etc
We also love board games and disney film night! 😀

we visit the local national parks, museums etc but if its raining we will have a family movie day and do arts and crafts at home out of stuff we already have. i collect little containers and old cereal boxes, loo rolls for them to make stuff out off.
we also stick google eyes on odd socks that we cant find the pair too to make sock puppets 🙂
We have fun making things from items that would otherwise be destined for the recycling bin … we recently made a fairytale castle for my daughter’s Barbie doll using old cardboard boxes, kitchen roll tubes, pink poster paint and left over pieces of fabric. We have also made pencil pots, kites, a bed for ‘Troy the teddy’ and also sorts of other fun things. As well as being a cheap way to spend a rainy afternoon, it also gives me quality time with my daughter and teaches her to think twice before throwing anything away.
Coupons and freebies generally!
I always try to look for vouchers to save money on days out and take a picnic.

We have curry night, Sainsburys basics Curry sauce makes a great vegetable curry and we have pitta bread instead of naan! Both my boys are young, so they love woodland walks and muddy puddle splashing, we take a flask and flapjacks (home made!). We go walking, it’s free! It’s great to get out and enjoy the sights and the fresh air
Staying in with a good film and snacks is always popular as is dancing to music on Spotify (free). I personally like it when the weather’s nice and we can go and run around in the countryside for nothing but the cost of petrol.
Huddling round the TV to watch a cracking family movie with the lights low and a crackling fire warming us up nearby 🙂
We have movie days or go out to the park.
Depends on the season, kids make a flower book of dried flowers in the summer. Collect leaves for painting during the autumn. They make nature books and draw bugs and things animals in that they see and then at the end of the 6 week holidays we look through it all. We do not really go out during the holidays and actually pay for things very often
We’re lucky that we only live a few miles from the beach, so in the summer we can spend the day there with a picnic and some games, and in the winter we can go for walks along the coast.
picnics, nature walks, park, cheap cinema tickets, arts and crafts with household papers wastes boxes toilet tubes etc. Anything can be made fun with a little imagination on a budget
We go for mature walks find different colour leaves and stick them into our nature book! Great fun
we cut out vouchers in newspapers 2 for 1 deals etc
Going swimming does not cost too much

As a family of six, days out can be quite expensive. However, we have two dogs and we all love going out with the dogs. We go to all sorts of different places, such as the seaside (usually out of season so we can walk the dogs on the beach), local parks, where the youngest can ride bikes or scooters, or through woodland, where a tree can become a new camp, or hidey-hole. We often take picnics and either eat them somewhere on our walk or, if too cold, we eat when we get back to the car. A fun day out is only limited by the imagination.

go to beach with the family
Getting dressed suitably for the weather and going for long walks with the dog, exploring different areas of countryside around where we live, taking a picnic when it is nice weather, making a day of it by packing a picnic and lots of different activities like books, portable painting stuff, and enjoy being outdoors making pictures and playing. Go to the park, go for bike rides, Take a day trip to the beach or a nature reserve or farm park. Investigate online at what local places are doing reduced or free admissions for places we haven’t been to before. Have ‘Craft days’ where we get all the crafty things out and get messy. And of course, watching a film together, I record lots of films as they come on TV so I always have plenty to do a home cinema afternoon with and have popcorn and sweets. Theres loads of things to do if you just use your mind.
