Have you ever wondered when is the right time to hire a public speaker?
From my experience the time to hire a public speaker is when you are looking for someone who knows what they are truly talking about.
My experience of public speaking
As a children’s author and therapist I have been hired myself a couple of time to give talks.
This is usually to children and it is usually about being an author or some aspect of mental health. The reason I am asked is because of my resume as a speaker which details my experience. But I am also asked because of my credentials. I am the author of 15 books and I also have a post grad in psychotherapy. So essentially I am ‘expert’ in my field and when I am asked to speak publicly it is because the schools or book festivals that hire me are looking for that expertise.
I also gave a TED talk on kindness in 2022 and this upped my profile as a speaker hugely and I was able to share this far and wide and it bought me to peoples attention.

When might you want to hire a public speaker?
Perhaps you run a youth or church group? Perhaps you are a teacher or an events manager or maybe you work in a living history museum. Many roles and jobs require talk’s to be presented and sometimes you need expertise that you just don’t have yourself.
I am going to give you an example.
Say you work in a school or college and are looking to celebrate, explore and focus in on Black History Month in your school. So, rather than spend hours reading around the subject and giving an ill informed presentation you might end up doing a search for black history month speakers UK to find someone who has the authority, experience and skills to speak on this subject eloquently. What a treat for your pupils to hear from someone who really knows their stuff and it would save you a rather huge amount of study.
Public speaking and you
It is really important that speeches of any kind are evidence based and well delivered and when you hire someone who has expertise in public speaking you can be sure of a quality performance. If you struggle with public speaking yourself it is a really good idea to watch an expert in practice and observe closely. Watching a variety of TED x talks is also a good idea. then it is all about practice to make perfect!
I love a bit of public speaking but I am aware it can make people super nervous. How do you feel about it? Do drop me a comment below.
