Review: Wonderbook: Book of Spells on the PS3 (A Harry Potter fans dream)

My son and I were invited to the launch of the new PS3 augmented reality game Wonderbook: Book of Spells. Oh my goodness it was amazing. There were cauldrons of fire, celebrities, tasks involving Harry Potter characters to complete, cakes, champagne, dragons flying from the ceiling, dressing up , face painting, a real spooky owl, libraries and theatre.

We also got to have a go at the new PS3 game Wonderbook: Book of Spells  What an absolutely awesome experience for an 8 year old Harry Potter fan (and his mum.) It felt like we were actually in Hogwarts (with Jade from the X Factor and Ben Shepherd – surreal!)

Wonderbook: Book of Spells  will be released on 16 November and the starter pack which includes the Wonderbook, Move Controller, Eye Camera and Book of Spells Game will retail at £59.99 and is avaibale to preorder now from Amazon I think it’s going to be a HUGE Christmas hit. Who doesn’t love Harry Potter and this game just totally opens up and lets children have further access to the world of Hogwarts. It’s a bit like stepping in to the storybooks.

Book of Spells is presented as being written by Miranda Goshawk over two hundred years ago, and found in the Restricted Section of the Hogwarts library. It is an advanced textbook for students, which will assist them on their journey to becoming an accomplished witch or wizard. How wonderful kids get to play out such fabulous imaginary roles.

Released this month, Wonderbook: Book of Spells provides wizards students with a place in which to read, discover, learn and practise spells such as Incendio, Wingardium Leviosa and Expelliarmus. It such fun wafting about the move controller over the blue book only to see it converted to a wand and an ancient spell book on screen.

In addition to fabulous stories facts relating to the spells, J.K. Rowling has written a conundrum that leads you through the experience, providing insight into what makes a successful witch or wizard, and inviting fans to journey through the book and unlock new tales at the end of each chapter rewarding students for their successful spell-casting. You also get to earn house points, I have just earned 15 for my house for perfectly levitating in the greenhouse. I am very proud!

The technology is awesome.  It looks like I really am holding a wand and casting spells and it pulls you completely into the wizardy world of Harry Potter . For Potter fans this couldn’t be more brilliant, lots of familiar characters and spells with tons of new material form the marvellous J.K. Rowling.

This is such an interesting game that will really encourage an even deeper affection for the books.Anything at all which encourages reading in kids gets my vote. So much better than running around shooting baddies. I love that literature can be so much fun for our children.

This was an absolute pleasure to review for me and Frankie and for once I am delighted when he wants to go on the playsation! (But he has to fight me for it!)  I’m hoping he will learn some house cleaning spells!

We both highly recommend this game.Wondeful new technology meets classic literature. Perfect.
