Profile of a budgeting mum

Hi, what’s your name? Su Tyler – Soosie Wales

Any kids? 2 grown up sons

Do you work? FT/PT? NO

If you don’t work why don’t you? Made redundant July 2010 and been job hunting on and off since then. Currently on a job hunt again.

What are your child care arrangements?  Now we have a grandson (2years) WE are the child care arrangement!

How do you manage for money? We do ok. Manage on Hubby’s wage – just about…We have some savings and we’ve paid off the mortgage. I hate not being able to have holidays like we did when I was working!

Do you worry about money? I don’t worry about our day to day expenditure but I do worry about whether we’ll manage ok when we retire. That’s only a few years away now!

What do you waste money on? I like to think that I don’t waste money. But we do have the odd take away or meal out.

Have you made any big financial changes since having kids? Definitely! We’ve lived through 2 recessions and had a mortgage with high interest back in the 80s. We were struggling big time until I was chatting with a friend and she told me how they budget. We didn’t budget before this and was ALWAYS overdrawn but after we budgeted we never used the overdraft. I blogged about it here:

How do you make extra cash? It isn’t a lot but I do online surveys and get from 50p to £2 for each one. I made about £50 on one and £25 on another in a it isn’t much!

Can you share 3 top budgeting tips for other parents?

1. Use the MoneySavingExpert mantra – Do I need it? Can I afford it? Have I checked if it’s cheaper elsewhere? If the answer is NO then don’t buy it!

2. Food shop with a list of what you need. Only buy special offers for things you would normally buy. Check supermarket deals before setting off.

3. Before buying in bulk make sure the item will last e.g. Don’t buy multipacks of fresh food that you’ll end up throwing out when it goes off!  Also make sure the bigger size really works out cheaper than paying for a smaller pack. It often doesn’t!
