Profile of a budgeting mum: Beky Daly

Hi, what’s your name? Beky

Any kids? One, a 2.5year old son called Kit.

Do you work? FT/PT? PT

Why do you work? To pay the bills! I’m a single mum so my income is the only income.

If you don’t work why don’t you?

What are your child care arrangements? Kit goes to a childminder at the moment, will be starting at a pre-school after Easter and holiday clubs in the holidays.

How do you manage for money? We are just about comfortable, we live within our means.

Do you worry about money? Yes. I don’t earn a huge amount at the moment and hate that I rely partly on benefits.

What do you waste money on? Magazines, my downfall, and something I have passed onto Kit, who has started asking for a magazine every time we pass a newsagents!

Have you made any big financial changes since having kids? Yes, I used to work full-time, live in a fairly cheap house-share and had (what now feels like) a large disposable income with no responsibility. Now I can only afford to work part-time (because of childcare costs) but my rent is higher. I spend a lot more in charity shops and a lot less on nights out!

How do you make extra cash? I have been crafting ready to start doing craft fairs to make a few extra pennies.

Can you share 3 top budgeting tips for other parents?

1. Thrift. Second-hand can be as good as new.

2. Grow-your-own. Your kids will learn where their food comes from and you can save some pennies.

3. Make do and mend. I love repurposing things, and Kit has blankets made of his old t-shirts etc. It’s nice to get something new from something old.
