Profile of a budgeting mum: Charlotte Biggs

Hi, what’s your name?  Charlotte Biggs

 Any kids? One

Do you work? FT/PT?   On maternity leave and I hope  to go back to work PT

Why do you work? I will work as my husbands wage is not enough for us to cover the bills

What are your child care arrangements?

I will go back to work 4 days a week. Olly will have one day with dad, one with grandad and two days in nursery

How do you manage for money?

We have cut back on everything which is not essential such as clothes, going out and general social activities. Having Oliver has changed our lives greatly and we are no longer as interested in going out we tend to have people round for a bottle of wine which costs a lot less then going to the pub.

 Do  you worry about money?

Yes, it is always a worry, I make sure all the bills are paid and any outstanding balances are kept interest free so we are not wasting money

What do you waste money on?

I would have to admit even though we buy a lot of second hand things for Oliver from nearly new sales and car boot sales we probably buy too much. It is hard as he can get through several outfits a day as he has reflux and is sick regularly.   We also tend to waste money on DVD’s as we like to watch TV Series and Films and have quite a big collection.

Have you made any big financial changes since having kids?

We have cut down dramatically on money we spent on ourselves.

How do you make extra cash?

Selling things on ebay which we no longer need or use, it is amazing how much rubbish we have accumulated!

Can you share 3 top budgeting tips for other parents?

Be thrifty – I am amazed at the quality and price of second hand baby clothes and toys. They don’t tend to get worn out and often look like new!

Write down your income and outgoings so you know how much money you have to play with.

I tend to food shop on a Monday I find the shop is a lot less busy and they have a lot more reduced items on the clearance shelves.

My Blog is called Baby Oliver

I started writing this when I was 12 weeks pregnant as I wanted to share my experiences with other mums. As Oliver is getting older I am keeping it up to date with his story and milestones. I look forward to being able to look through it when he is older and show him what he was like when he was a baby!

Thanks Charlotte!
