Profile of a budgeting mum: Rachel Bradbury

Hi, what’s your name? Rachel Bradbury

Any kids? Yes 2 – Jack 3 and Lilly 4 months

Do you work? FT/PT? Yes PT but it is my own business from home so I am always checking emails and dealing with issues if I need to.

Why do you work? For my own sanity, to continue learning and to hopefully take home some extra money!

If you don’t work why don’t you?

What are your child care arrangements?  Jack is in nursery two full days a week and a further two half days at playgroup.  Lilly stays with me so work is inbetween cuddles, play and feeds!

How do you manage for money? My husband pays the bills while I continue to grow Custard & Crumble.

Do  you worry about money? Sometimes but who doesn’t.  I worry about the pressure on my husband to continue to earn.

What do you waste money on? Mostly food as with two kids we rarely go out like we used to! Also clothes and toys for the kids – it’s difficult to say no and then they grow out of things so quickly!

Have you made any big financial changes since having kids? We certainly spend less socially on going out, takeaways and clothes etc.  Now we spend those extras on the kids and budget to ensure we can afford the childcare and classes that we want to do with both Jack and Lilly.

How do you make extra cash? By paying myself from my business Custard & Crumble or making the money we have work harder by budgeting and planning.

Can you share 3 top budgeting tips for other parents?

1. Budget your weekly food shop and do it online.  That way you can plan your meals and avoid waste as well as avoid those impulse purchases in the shops.

2. You can easily overspend in a month without realising where it is going.  At the end of each month go through your bank statement and block together your spends so you know how much has been spent on clothes, food, petrol etc each month.  You may need to re-address your budgets or realise where you need to cut back.

3. Clothes swap with friends.  I bought everything new for Jack but now I have friends with children I have clothes swapped Jacks old things for Lilly’s clothes from friends and have hardly had to buy anything new.
