Music: memories and gifts

Music is one of those things in life that costs very little in cash terms compared to the huge effect it can have.

My mum and dad used to love musicals. They would both get cosy and settle d on Sunday afternoons and watch those same films again and again. I think I know every song form the Wizard of Oz, High society, the King and I and the Sound of Music. They soothe me and they move me and they make me sing along and want to dance. These were often shown at Christmas time and they take me right back to simpler days where I had my grownups to hug me and keep me safe.

Mum loved country music and once we went to Nashville and we saw Johnny Cash’s sister perform in cowboy church. And we went to Memphis too and we saw where the mighty Elvis lived and we both stood at the very spot where he first made a record at Sun Studios. Elvis and country music have a huge emotional impact on me now too bringing back powerful memories.

I once took mum to see Willie Nelson who sand for 2 ½ hours with no break.  We saw Don Williams twice and we saw Kenny Rodgers too. We liked Don best. He has this deep gravelly voice and he sang ‘You’re my best friend’ as if he was singing it to me and meaning every word. How we smiled that night.

Dad loved Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald too. Oh and Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. If he was here today I would defiantly get him Michael Buble tickets. He would love Michael…so classy and classic. He was always whistling my dad.  I adore hearing men whistle. Michael Buble is a good whistler you know (as well as being very cute!) A friend of mine has tickets to see him next year. I am more than a little jealous.

My first record was ‘ Wooden Heart’ age 10. I still love vinyl. At 15 I bought my first cd and oh I had taste. It was Candi Staton and the Source ‘You got the love.’ Today it is still fabulous and a bit of an anthem, always makes me jump up and dance!

Music is a gift that transcends and inspires across and through generations and along our personal timeline.

Giving the gift of music can be like giving a very powerful and precious treasure. A good gift choice for someone on a budget I think
