So how do you go about Saving Money When Moving House?

Big life changes tend to be equally big money eaters. It’s not always as easy to cut costs when you’re already up to your neck in planning, preparations, and the generally stress-filled tasks that needs to be done before the big move. Yet, by doing a few simple things before you close the door of your old home and open a brand new one, you can actually be a lot better off than you would have been.

Use these tips to become a more efficient and tidy home mover; it won’t guarantee a stress-free move but at least you can look back on your budget, knowing that you made the right kind of decisions.

#1 Sell your stuff

If you’re a bit of a procrastinator like the rest of us, it’s way too easy to put off the stuff that doesn’t seem as urgent. Sure, it is important to get packing and move as soon as you’re ready but by sorting out your old home first you may, in fact, be able to make a bit of money – which you can spend on new stuff, of course.

By not bringing all of your belongings you’re also saving some on packaging boxes and bubble wrap, by the way. It might not be enough to convince you but it certainly helps. There are many hidden costs of home purchases so if you can make some money selling it will off-set these.

Have a look at this site to find a good marketplace for your stuff online, look up the product description and a decent price, take a picture or two, and wait for someone to fall in love with it.

#2 Find the right removal team

Those who have moved houses a couple of times before know very well how expensive a removal company can be. Make sure you do your research, first of all, and use Shiply to compare quotes so that you get the best possible price.

If you don’t have a lot of heavy furniture to transport, it’s a good idea to ditch the removal company altogether and opt for asking a friend or family member for help instead. Just keep an extra eye on how your belongings are stacked in your friend’s van, though, as removal companies have experience with making sure that everything is stacked securely.

#3 Schedule your move

Since this is all about saving money, it’s a good idea to take another look at your calendar to ensure you’re not missing any days at work due to moving. Try to schedule it for the weekend, preferably, or maybe after work on a Friday so that you have the entire weekend to settle in and get comfortable.

#4 Use second-hand boxes

Who knew those cardboard boxes could be so expensive? It’s ridiculous, really, so consider getting ahold of some second-hand boxes instead. They will work just as fine, of course, and you’re not going to care much about who stored their stuff in it before you.

There are actually a lot of ways to make your move a lot cheaper; just make sure you do your preparations beforehand and label everything correctly. After all, how annoying would it be having to rush out to get that tube of toothpaste when you know very well that you packed it somewhere.

Great tips! Most local shops will be happy to donate some of their cardboard boxes and that makes moving so much cheaper than forking out for brand new boxes. Decluttering as you pack up is also a good idea and then you can see which stuff you can sell on.
