I used to love snakes and ladders, a very simple game. We used to change the rules when it came to the end….. did you have to get the exact number or did you go to the end and come back again or with younger kids if their number was higher they could win. That’s the good things about some games, you can adapt them to suit the needs of the kids.
I have used adapted snakes and ladders games in school – going up the ladders for a positive action e.g. ‘You invited a new girl to join in with your game.’ and down the snake for something not as nice, e.g. ‘You changed your mind about going to someone’s party because you got a better invitation at the last minute.’ Children would have to discuss before going up or down etc. You can adapt the concept of this game to teach all sorts of things – healthy eating, pocket money budgeting etc etc. It’s only limited by your imagination! Playing with others and talking when playing is the most important bit.
