The Cooperative Membership Fund
The Co op Community fund is on the lookout for people to carry out good work in the community. There core values are giving back to the communities that they serve and this fund totally demonstrates this.
The fund is made up of donations from members who have chosen to give a percentage of their twice-yearly share of the profits. This year The Co-operative Members have donated an amazing £1.2 million to local community groups over the UK. Grants range from a minimum of £100 to a maximum of £2,000.
To qualify for a grant projects must
- address a community issue,
- provide long term benefit to the community,
- support co-operative values and principles &
- be innovative
A group doesn’t have to have charitable status to apply so it could be a group of mums wanting to set up a lunch club for isolated younger mums for example.
I run a church group for under fives that is a really positive way to being young families together within the community. We have very low funding and the Co op community fund would really help us by just providing drinks and snacks and nicer craft materials maybe a cd player to make the experience of coming together richer. It’s only little things we need but a cup of teas and stickers go a long way!
Groups have to apply for the funding – application form is available on the web site. The Co-operative Community Fund operates on a truly local level. The money each region has to give is the money that members have donated in their area. Projects are allocated by postcode. I think I’m going to apply for my group so I hope our neighbours have been generous!
Have you got any good ideas?
