5 Tips for Saving Money on Travel

For many people, the biggest thing standing between them and the vacation of their dreams is money. Many people,  especially families with children, find planning a trip to be overwhelming and assume that doing so is out of their budget. While it is true that traveling can be expensive, there are definitely things you can do to minimize the cost without having to sacrifice the parts of your trip that you are most excited about.

Here are a few easy ways to save money when taking a trip.

Give Yourself Time to Plan

While it is understandable to want to take a trip shortly after beginning to plan it, scheduling your trip as far in the future as possible will give you time to save up money, and time to hunt for deals on everything from flights to hotels. Some destinations, like Disneyland, offer layaway plans, which allow you to pay off your trip in smaller increments over time before you take it.

Research as Much as Possible

When planning your trip in advance, make sure to spend a good amount of time researching your destination(s) as well as all activities you plan to do. You can often find online-exclusive deals that can save you money on things like admission to certain attractions, or can learn about special savings that can only be redeemed on certain days. Plan to spend a fairly large amount of time doing research online in the months leading up to your trip, so you know what to expect to spend and can take advantage of all savings possible.

Find the Best Travel Deals

One of the most costly parts of any trip, regardless of your destination, is transportation. Airfare can be expensive, but so can fuel if you are traveling a long distance. Planning far in advance can be a big help, as well as thoroughly checking multiple travel sites and the airline’s site itself. It can also be helpful to be flexible on the dates you’d like to travel, as sometimes booking a day later, or even an hour later can end up saving you a great deal. If traveling with a large group to a destination where driving is possible, splitting gas money could be more cost-effective than flying (and a road trip only adds to the fun). Depending on the size of your group and budget, you could even rent a private jet from a company like Access Jet.

Look at All Lodging Options

Hotels can also be one of the most expensive aspects of traveling, especially if you are  traveling in a big group that would need to rent more than one room just to have enough space for everyone. For families or big groups, renting a condo or entire house might be a better option. This would allow for everyone in your group to stay in one place and would allow your entire party to split the total cost, making it much cheaper for each person individually.

Another advantage of this option is that the majority of condos or homes come with a complete kitchen, allowing you to cook your own meals and save on dining out.

Use A Travel Agent

If you find that you are still concerned about budgeting your trip, it might be beneficial for you to utilize the services of a travel agent. Travel agents have access to deals that you can’t find anywhere else, no matter how much time you spend researching, and can often get you the absolute cheapest prices for important aspects of your trip like airfare, lodging, and the cost of any activities you do. Many travel agents charge little to no cost for their services and can be a great way to help alleviate some of your stress about budgeting a trip while ensuring that your next vacation is extra special for everyone.
