Scar stories

When I was a child I have to say I was pretty uncoordinated and always in a mad rush to learn everything.

These two attribute combined to cause lots of bumps, bruises and scrapes,  particularly when it came to learning to ride my bike. Oh it seemed to take me forever and a day to learn to stay on that bike! Much longer than any of my friends. There were many tears and a lot of plasters and antiseptic cream involved.

My knees have never quite recovered and a few little scars remain!  And I am still pretty rubbish on a bike. (That’s me in the glasses)

Bumps and scrapes and minor injuries seem to go hand in hand with adventurous kids.

Mum always mopped up my tears with lots of cuddles and a bit of basic first aid. She always washed my scrapes with warm water then applied Germolene. How I love the smell of Germolene it always reminds me of my mum.

Germolene Antiseptic Cream helps to treat minor cuts and prevent infection. as well  minor burns, scalds, blisters, stings and insect bites, spots and chapped or rough skin (so very hand to have instock if you have kids!) The cream is dual has antiseptic properties for the disinfection of skin and local anaesthetic action for the relief of pain. The cream base helps to soften the skin and soothe irritation.  It costs just £1.79 (RRP) for a 30g tube and £2.99 (RRP) for a 55g tube so a really inexpensive but invaluable  addition to your parent protection kit! (always read the label!)

Mum was absolutely fine about my bike (and roller skate) escapades though despite the tears. She really believed, as do I, that kids learn best through playing, about balance, co-ordination, timing, social skills and so much more.  Minor scrapes are part of childhood and we all have a tale to tell!

I make sure my kids are safe with knee pads, bike hat and padded clothing and that know the basic rules of safety but I don’t stop them climbing tresses or riding their bikes down hills. I think it is important of course they are safe but we can’t wrap them up in cotton wool. I just make sure I have a good supply of cuddles, antiseptic cream and plasters!

I have a scar on my right knee due to going over my bikes handlebars when I was 7 years old, this was due to me riding too fast and the front wheel falling off which I blame my dad for not putting on properly lol.

I have a scar on my wrist from when I did sports day. I really hated my PE teacher and I think it was mutaul as she made me do the hurdles even after it had been raining. Problem was that we had only practised on the small ones but on the day they were full size!!! I caught my leg on the hurdle and kinda landed on my arm/wrist AND on the hurdle…I was so embarrassed that I didnt tell anyone how much it hurt…I went over 24 hours with a dislocated and broken wrist without telling anyone, once I finally did it had to be operated on straight away as I was losing feeling. My mum went mental at the school.

Age 6 – I braked too quickly and went over the handlebars of my bike and still have the scar on my top lip from the gravel . Rather more embarrassing was age 32 I tripped over my mule shoe and bounced off my chin onto the pavement , knowing my dad was coming to fetch me I lay in a pool of blood , dad arrived stopping the car at an angle in the road , he fetched a work colleague who then started accusing dad of running me over !

I have quite an obvious scar on my chin. It happened when I was 7 years old. I feel on to a tree log. What makes it worse is it the shape of a Mercedes car symbol. But for everything else there Germolene.

Before I started school, I went to daycare while my parents went to work. Lots of other kids went as well and we had a very large outdoor play area. I was running around wildly and ran smack into a broomstick that an older boy was swinging in the opposite direction. I grabbed the left side of my forehead and ran around screaming before stopping in front of a worker and spraying her with blood. Apparently my skull could be seen and I was taken to hospital. I wasn’t allowed to be put to sleep while I had stitches because I could have died or had brain damage. I remember my dad promising me ice cream when it was all over. I’m now 32 and still have the large scar on my forhead.

When I was a toddler my mum had mopped the floor, I thought it would be fun to slide over it and subsequently headbutted the corner of a worktop cutting my head open, I was taken to hospital to have stitches and have a scar to prove!! And I remember that someone dressed as Mr Bump visited me and the other children in hospital.

I have a scar on my shin from falling off my bike when I was 7. I was trying to do a wheelie but hit the kerb & fell off. The peddle was metal & dug into my leg. Yes I ran home crying but my mum patched me up & I got back on my bike again. Happy days!

I have two scars on my scalp. One from falling off my bike, while I had chicken pox (mum says its the quickiest she has ever been in and out of A & E) resulting in 5 stitches. and the other one was on cub camp playing rounders, I was backstop and got the bat smashed straight into my head! which resulted in 15 stitches.

I ran into the door frame when i was about five years old and as a result have a scar through my eyebrow where no hairs grow, it looks like that trend that was about where lines were trimmed out of your eyebrow, so i was just ahead of my time -a trend setter at five years old.

I have a big scar on my forehead which was from twirling round and falling into some iron railings and then a few years later diving into the shallow end of a swimming pool. I had to have stitches and then wear a bandage that looked like a teabag right in the middle of my forehead for a couple of weeks.

When I was a kid we played blinds man buff but when I was blindfolded and trying to catch the other kids they failed to tell me that one of the drains cover had been removed and I fell down it and scratched all
my sides and got one hell of a fright, to this day I hate drains.

I have a scar on my left eyebrow where I walked in to a key in the door, my mum was talking to our next door neighbour while I was walking about covered in blood trying to get her attention, she didn’t even take me to hospital lol. I have to use pencil to colour the scar in as no eyebrow hair ever grew back on it.

I have a scar on my index finger from when I was 10. My brother was eight and we were wrapping christmas presents. I asked for the scissors and as he passed them to me, I put my fingers in the blades and he snapped them shut. I had to have stitches and it was nasty.

I was 11 and after a fab day skating around on my new roller blades was called inside for dinner. In my know it all wisdom I decided it was a good idea to stand up take them off. This was a REALLY bad idea as it resulted in me loosing my balance and toppling backwards. When I tried to put my hands out behind me to stop my bottom plonking on the floor I managed to snap my right arm in half (yes completely through into two pieces).
This obviously induced a slight screaming fit from myself and my dad came and carried me onto the sofa. My mum then came and took a look at what was basically a new wrist and decided it was absolutely fine and I was being a baby so continued to cook dinner!!! It was only after 2 hours of sobbing, swelling and my dad realising what resembled a 2nd wrist was in fact NOT normal before my parents took me to A&E where I was knocked out for it to be reset. The break was so bad that even today I have a slightly wonky arm where my second wrist did not heal straight.
Oh and then there was the time I bumped into a door handle and fractured my arm, or jumped a wall and dislocated my knee, or played netball and broke my fingers, or lots of other stories. If you can’t tell I was a bit of a clumsy one ?

My mum used to manage a pub and in the school holidays me and my brother used to play in the ‘ballroom’ where there were no customers (in the daytime). We were supposed to ask if we wanted a drink or anything to eat. But the staff were busy so I hopped up on the bar, leaned over the bar and poured us both a coke each (which were weren’t supposed to have)! I heard someone coming so jumped down, smashing the glasses of coke on the floor. I scooped up the glass, leaving a big piece of glass sticking out of my little finger. I have the scar from stitches and every now and then it will itch reminding me of my youth and stupidity!!!!!

My mum took us to a new park which had one of these huge metal slides, at seven years of age watching the older kids superman face down and doing all sorts looked incredibly fun. So I decided to join in, went face down on the slide, couldn’t stop myself and hit the gravel at an impressive speed, leaving me with a few scratches and bruises which cleared up apart from this small scar right under my lip that’s stayed with me since

I have a scar above my right eye thanks to an orange 1970’s Space Hopper. Me & my sister used to race around the garden a la It’s a Knockout style. We would make an obstacle course with balls and tennis rackets, fill paddling pools with bubblebath bubbles! , mud and cold water then hit the spacehoppers for the final race home. I was in the lead until the corner of the house got al ittle close to my hopper and I smacked straight into it! Blood gushing from the wound I mounted the spacehopper again and left a blood trail to the finish…. my sister was laughing so much she never bothered to finish! Its good to have reminders of your childhood… these days kids will only have a callous on their fingers from the button on the gamestation….. no fun 🙂

My thumb has a scar from when I was about 10, I’d been searching for cray fish in the local stream and fell over landing on my jam jar. Still remember with great indignation the telling off I got for ruining my dress by wrapping my thumb in the hem so I could use my other hand to push my bike home.

I fell off my bike on two separate occasions when I was about 9. One of the times I fractured my elbow, still have a scar from that. Second time I injured my ankle though thankfully no scar. I have numerous scars from injuries sustained in a car accident but I was 17 so not really a child.

Great question: I have a scar on the inside of my wrist. I was climbing a tree aged 6 in The Field, what we called some wasteland at the back of our garden. I fell out of the tree and sliced my wrist (luckily horizontally, not in deep) on a broken bottle. I still remember seeing the broken bottle come up towards me as I fell, seemingly in slow motion. Mum was a nurse so she sorted me out.

I was a tomboy and always wore trousers. For a short while when I was around eight years old my mother attempted to make me look like a girl. She made me wear a bright red, shiny skirt and matching waistcoat. When I tried to climb over a fence my leg got caught in the skirt and I promptly sat down on the sharp pointed top.
Many hours and ten stitches later the skirt found its way into the bin. My old trousers made a welcome return. I still bear the scar from that awful skirt on my backside.

I have a big scar on the back of my left leg here I fell off my Childs motorcycle when I was small, I was meant to have jeans on when I rode it but I took them off and got on the bike without permission, rode down the driveway and crashed into my parents car, the bike fell on top of me and the exhaust burnt my leg severely and still got the scar to tell the tale now, moral of the story – always listen to your parents!

I have a 2 inch scar on my forehead from when I was about 4. My mum and sister had gone to church and I’d stayed home with my dad. Me and him were in the front lounge, I went out of the room to get something and heard my mum and sister ring the doorbell. I ran to the door (no idea why as I knew I was too short to open the door) so I raced back into the lounge to get my dad. As I ran in I slipped on the carpet as I was wearing my new school shoes to ‘wear’ them in. I slipped head first onto the corner of our brick hearth that was covered in a copper sheet (honestly it was fashionable in the 80’s!!!) Obviously the edges were very sharp and I cut my head open. The next thing I remember is being sat in my dads Landrover going up to the hospital. I still remember that I was wearing my favourite pink dungarees and my mum had given me a green tea towel to hold on my head. I can see myself sat in the hospital and being terrified about getting the stitches – I had three in the end. Funny what you remember isn’t it?

I have a scar across my index finger from nearly severing it off with a CUTLASS! When i was about 8, I decided that I wanted some sugar cane (some body had bought it back from Barbados, for us). I had seen my dad use his cutlass to cut off the outside, many times, so when he told me to wait until he got back from the shops, I decided that I knew better.

After a couple of good swings at it, i suddenly felt a sharp pain and realised that I had cut myself. Not wanting to get into trouble, I washed iff the knife, put it back in the shed and began washing off my finger. The blood kept coming, so when my dad came home, I had to fess up LOL! He took one look at it and said we had to go to the hospital, as he could see my bone. Obviously, I never toughed that cutlass again x

My Knee – I was running along the pavement when I was about 7 with a friend, near halloween, she had her witches costume and broom, my mum being disabled had very little money to spend, so I was quite a practical child and made my own broom from a broken broom and masking tape – well flying along it all comes unstuck, I tangle in it and literally fly right onto a new graveled path – ouch

I fell from the slide in the school playground, it was the 70’s so I went straight onto tarmac. My teacher didn’t want to hurt me when she cleaned my knee so I’ve now got a thin grey line of gravel forever imbeded in my knee.

Mine really is terrible, so beware! I have a very small scar on my nose which has become smaller as I have aged (thankfully). Anyway, one day when I was about 7, I heard the ice cream van and went running down our steep back street to get there before he left. Unfortunately, I tripped and skidded down the street on my face, eventually landing in some dog faeces…..My Mum tells me that she was almost physically sick when cleaning me up ewwwwwww! Sadly, I was then too late for the ice cream van! My Mum says that I have always been greedy so it didnt surprise her that I was running so fast to get to some food! lol. PS sorry if I have made anyone feel ill….and I am glad I can remain semi anonymous on here!!

I have had a broken nose (a few times). I just loved swimming, when I couldn’t swim, loved diving, when I couldn’t dive and subsequently was always getting it wrong. Hence the nose, Mum and Dad had to take me to swimming lessons at the local baths, the lifeguards were getting fed up with fishing me out of the pool. As an adult I played for work in a charity football match and hey ho, I was the one who got hit in the face with the ball. No I’m not male, just an ordinary female with a broken nose.

I was showjumping my pony and had forgotten to do my girth up tight enough. Sure enough as a sped round the corner in the jump off, my saddle slipped and my pony proceeded to approach the next jump. Needless to say, I hit the deck and injured my bottom as well as my pride :0)

I have an inch-long scar next to my left eye. My sister and her friend were playing up in the loft and tried to put the loft hatch back so I couldn’t join in. It fell through the gap and caught me near my eye. I didn’t realise what had happened (no sense, no feeling) and thought they were throwing raspberry juice down on me, but it was blood! Five stitches later and a massive black eye, my teacher said that my make-up would cover the scar when I was older (it was the 80s, but that would be some mega eye shadow!). I’m pleased to say that my sister and I are now best of friends and the scar is just part of me.

I have a dent and a scar on my left shin. When I was about 8 I fell up the small wall in our back garden and my shin hit the corner of a protruding stone. I remember that it bled a huge amount but didn’t need stitches – however it took weeks to heal and left the tell-tale scar. My brother has an even more impressive scar – he is 7 years older than me and when he was 15, used to look after me from school until my mum came home from work. He used to cook our tea and would always send me out to the freezer to get the food and then lock me out (our freezer was in the garage which was accessed from a door just opposite our back door). One day I tried to get my own back on him and shut him out – unfortunately he realised what was happening and put his arm out to stop me shutting the door – unfortunately he put his arm through the pane of glass on the door and ended up with 13 stitches in his wrist. Our neighbour took him to A & E and when my mum and dad got home, all they could see was a pool of blood on the ground!

I have a big scar on my left leg…. My mam crashed the car when we were little and my leg got trapped between the front seat and where I was sitting. My leg was a mess. Thankfully it is all better now, but I will always have the scars to remember.

When I was about 11 years me and my cousin went to Greenwich park with our skate boards and we chose the biggest hill to go down.

However I was laying on my stomach and the skate board went down the hill so fast that I went into the railing, but as I put out my hand to protect myself my hand hit the railing and my finger got dislocated and we had to go to the nearest hospital for me to have it put back in place, and did that hurt!! Ouch.

I’m riddled with scars after the birth of my daughter but I don’t hide them away, they are of course – the marks of life!

I have a scar just under my chin where I burst my jaw falling through the bars of the Spider’s tallest leg at my local park. There was so much blood down the front of my t shirt that my dad thought I’d slit my throat…and he fainted. Thankfully, mum just got on with the clean up – which revealed a tiny cut, smothered it in germolene and covered it with the biggest plaster she could find!

I have a scar across the top of my cheek from when I was bitten badly by a horse whilst at my local children’s riding centre, age 6. It was really bad and needed restoration surgery. Thankfully the scar is now quite difficult to notice, so it could have been much worse. Still… that was the end of my horse riding hobby!

When I was about 8 I went to nan and grandad’s. I plonked myself down on their rocking chair, as I did each Saturday. This particular day, I encountered a mishap of epic proportion. As I dropped down into the comforting chair, I felt something sharp. I was making a sort of mewling / howling noise that my nan mistook initially for laughing. It was not laughter let me tell you. Someone had left a pair of nail scissors on the chair. You know- those that curve? Yep – curved right into my derriere!! Oh my gosh the pain. And as if that wasnt bad enough, they had to be removed!! I still have the scar – small on my backside, huge in my mind!! The memory makes me shudder 🙂
