Profile of a Budgeting Mom: Dani Herzog from Martinis and Minivans

After 3 years of doing profiles of UK mums my first American mom is profiled!

Hi, what’s your name? Danielle Herzog from Martinis and Minivans

Any kids? Two

Do you work? FT/PT? Yes, I’m a part-time freelance writer, part-time graduate student and full time stay at home mother

Why do you work? While my children make me insane, my writing brings me slightly back to sanity. Slightly.

What are your child care arrangements? No childcare – I live for naptime.

How do you manage for money? We live off my husband’s salary and use mine for extra spending

Do  you worry about money? Every single day

What do you waste money on? We love to go out to dinner.  We are big foodies and unfortunately, my waistline at times shows it!

Have you made any big financial changes since having kids? We stopped spending it as much.  We are each driving cars with over 100,000 miles on them because we don’t want another car payment at this time. Even though I fantasize every day about buying a minivan.

How do you make extra cash? Writing

Can you share 3 top budgeting tips for other parents?

1. Have one night a week where you have to create a meal entirely from things in your pantry. No stopping at the store for an ingredient here and there. Make it a weekly ritual.

2. Life gets busy and you can’t always get a freshly made dinner on the table. I try to always keep a spare pizza in the freezer. It is far cheaper than calling take out once a week.

3. Frozen vegetables are your friend. You can steam them, sauté them, and even microwave them. Fresh vegetables are tasty but expensive. You can replicate the taste with cooking methods and save money big time.

About our blog:

Martinis and Minivans is a blog for anyone who has ever needed a martini after driving a minivan around all day. Or for anyone who has just ever needed a martini.  It’s the adventures of a New Yorker now living the Midwest America life as a somewhat sarcastic writer, mother and member of one ridiculously large Italian family.

Thank you Dani!
