How hobbies are passed down through generations is something that absolutely fascinates me.
I have definitely been impacted by the interests of my parentis and grandparents and keeping their passions alive has kept their memory vivid.
Chums, who have recently created a campaign called Legacy of Leisure: Passing Down Passions Through Generations. The campaign explores how hobbies and leisure habits are passed down through generations. They undertook a survey of 1,000 UK adults aged 60+. It reveals lots of fabulous and heart warming stories of family traditions, sustainability habits like reusing biscuit tins, and even how old wives’ tales become everyday practices.
It also discovered that 59% of the respondents inherited hobbies like gardening, reading, or baking from older generations.
Engaging in hobbies daily is linked to better physical health, lower stress, and improved mental clarity. It has definitely bought huge benefits to my life to have great hobbies that I love. let me tell you about those I inherited.
My awesome Grandad
My grandad was an absolutely lovely man who tended his garden with great care and devotion. He loved roses and irises and always grew tomatoes and I also do this. He showed me how to prune and care for a flowers and fruits and how to start off small seedlings and I, in turn, have taught my kids to do the same. Gardening is a gift that keeps on giving and it stills my mind and brings great pride.
I love that he was so passionate about this and shared this with me and I appreciate and pass on all he taught me to my own children and anyone that shows even the tiniest bit of interest inmy garden.
My lovely Mum
My mum was a romance fanatic, and a huge reader of love stories that always ended well and I have developed a huge love of the genre. I wrote my own romance novel last year and I read with gusto every romance book I can. It has bought me SO much pleasure throughout my life to believe in the power of love and happy endings and has kept me positive and optimistic when life has been tough. What a great legacy from my brilliant mum. It has become a hobby, a job and an emotional balm in my life.
My Great Uncle Harold
My great uncle Harold used to be a fabulous letter writer. His beautiful, long, handwritten letters would make me laugh and think and reflect. From him I learned the joy and power of a handwritten note and sharing a story or thought. I love to write letters now to people I love and hope it will touch their lives positively just as his letters touched mine. It is undoubtedly a wonderful hobby and one that is not so popular these days and definitely deserves reviving!
I would be so interested to know what hobbies and interests you have inherited and those you would most like to pass on. Please do leave me a comment and share your legacies too.
